Why Use a Content Management System (CMS)?
When you build a website with a CMS, you put the content editing power back into your hands, without needing to know any web code. Change page content, menus, pictures, add videos, add photo galleries, and add slideshows all by yourself! While that may sound daunting, it really does not have to be. Most CMS solutions have a very intuitive graphical user interface, drag-n-drop features, and plenty of tutorials are at your fingertips by using Google or your favorite search engine. We have created a WordPress tutorial section for our clients too!
Are Content Management Systems Expensive to Implement?
In actuality they end up saving you money, even when you factor in routine maintenance costs by web developers. Most content management systems come with the ability to use a template, theme, or skin for your design and layout. This reduces time and cost in development. Also, if you want to add dynamic functionality (like a slideshow, video player, calendar, shopping cart, or membership/subscription services) to your website then there are extensions/plugins that add this functionality for you. This means you do not need to pay a web developer to re-invent the wheel and code these from scratch for you. This flexibility and modular structure makes for great websites at much reduced cost. Also, don’t forget that when it’s all said and done you are able to edit your own content too! So, there is no need to contact a web developer for every change you want to make to your content!
What Maintenance Costs Can I expect?
Content management systems are constantly being updated. These updates occur primarily for the following reasons: browser compatibility issues, mobile device support, added functionality, security patches, bug fixes, code improvements, and speed enhancements. What this means for you the website owner is that updates should be reviewed and regularly performed. With WordPress this is the single greatest way to keep your website secure and protect it from intrusion. Occasionally updates are not compatible with your system, or require some settings to be changed. Kismet Design offers an update testing service on a development copy of your website, to evaluate how updates will impact your live site. This way you experience no significant downtime from site maintenance. Usually this takes us 1-4 hours for websites we are familiar with, which costs $60–$240. We recommend updating your WordPress site at least once every quarter.
What CMS does Kismet Design Recommend?
We recommend WordPress! If you’ve been browsing our site this should come as no surprise to you by now 🙂 When looking to the future of web development years ago, we saw a trend towards CMS website use. We researched the more notable content management systems at the time (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, phpBB, and Blogger) and WordPress already had more themes, plugins (compare to extensions in other CMS), and a greater support forum. As we watched web trends we saw that the WordPress core had the most active development, and that theme and plugins authors were equally committed to updating their products.
WordPress has continued to be used more than any other CMS (source: w3techs.com – external link). Additionally, the interface is easy to learn and tends not to be cluttered or repetitive. Functionally, there are more plugins than any other CMS – if you can think of a feature you want, chances are it has already been programmed! Design-wise there are thousands of beautiful themes and templates to choose from. Additionally, we are very experienced at laying custom designs (both ours, and ones that our clients bring to us) over the top of various WordPress themes, so there is no limit to how your website can look or function. So, dream big!
Here is a short list of reasons why we recommend WordPress
- Intelligent Text Formatting
- Custom Menus
- Multiple Authors
- Full User Registration
- Extensions – 1,000’s of Free Plugins
- Easily Find Support

Other Content Management Systems
Kismet Design has experience working with Joomla and Drupal too, but we’d much rather stick with WordPress. WordPress is more robust, easier to use, used most often on the web, has greater backwards compatibility among updates, is updated more regularly, has more plugin extensions and themes, and a much greater support system. If you need us to do some work on your Drupal or Joomla site, we can still get it done.
Other eCommerce Systems
Kismet design has also worked with Magento and Zen Cart. However, we still find greater flexibility among design, functionality, integrating various shipping companies’ costs, and billing systems with one of the many WordPress eCommerce solutions we use.
