Keep in mind that Google and the major search engines are constantly changing the way they rank websites (through an algorithm) to make everything fair. Sometimes this works in your favor, sometimes it does not. Either way, there are some basic things you can do to make sure you’re doing your part.
The basic things we do for SEO are:
- Determine your target audience.
- Make sure you’re using ‘clean’ code on your site.
- Establish important keywords/keyword phrases that you want to rank high for.
- Evaluate your competition & what techniques they are using for SEO.
- Verify you’re using relevant content that contains your keywords throughout the pages on your site.
- Put in correct title & meta tags.
- Guide you in getting proper backlinks (other websites to link to yours).
- Remove or fix any dead or incorrect links.
Using Google’s Web Tools
Are you taking advantage of Google’s website tools to help you evaluate and identify areas of your site that need improvement? Three of the Google tools we highly recommend are: Google Places, Google Webmaster Tools, and Google Analytics. Read more about these tools below.
Google Webmaster Tools is a collection of web tools available to help guide webmasters in search engine optimization. It allows you to submit a sitemap of your website each time you update your content (which can be done automatically if you’re using WordPress), track keywords and meta-data, check for broken links & code, and gives you a current analysis of how the Googlebots view your website.
Google Analytics allows you to track all of your traffic coming in and going out of your website. Once you sign up for an account, you can copy tracking code with your unique ID onto your website, then submit those page to Google through the sitemap you created in your Webmaster Tools account.
It takes a couple weeks to get good tracking data, but once it takes effect you can view how many hits each o your pages are getting, how long people stay on your site, and where those visits are coming from.
Google Places is especially helpful for businesses that target local clientele. If you do a search online for a local business, you’ll normally see a directory for everyone listed with Google Places before you see the organic search results.
Google places lists contact information, goods or services offered, and a map for getting quick and easy directions. It also allows you to add pictures or other multi-media to your listing, and gives you a text box where you can feature sales or other important information.
